Every eleven years the magnetic poles of the sun switches. What it means? Kushal. U. Vyas, Vadodara, Gujarat.

(1) The question that Kushal U. Vyas asks is one of the key questions that scientists are now trying to determine about the Sun. The eleven year cycle of solar activity and the switching of the dominant magnetic polarization in the northern and southern hemispheres every eleven years is a mystery that inspires quite a bit of debate among scientists. One can look at Wikipedia online under the subject “solar cycle”. Wikipedia is not a scientific journal, but you can follow some of the references cited there. For example, in the section entitled “Phenomena, measurement, and causes” you will see the section that says:  "The basic causes of thesolar variability and its cycles are still under debate, with some researchers suggesting a link with the tidal forces due to the gas giantsJupiter and Saturn,[7][8] or due to the solar inertial motion.[9][10] Another cause of Sun spots can be solar jet stream "torsional oscillation”. The point is that there is no specific answer yet as to what the solar cycle really means or why it occurs. - Dr. Jim Thieman, Radio Jove, NASA/GSFC

The Sun’s magnetic field works differently than the Earth’s.  The Earth has a large magnetic field generated by the motion of molten iron alloys in its outer core. This creates a dipole, somewhat like there were a giant bar magnet inside the Earth: solarcycle-1
However, the Sun has a huge number of magnetic fields, generated by the motion of plasma inside the Sun. These get twisted and turned by the Sun’s rotation, which is faster at the equator than at the poles. When these twisted fields erupt through the Sun’s surface, sunspots are formed. Sunspots usually come in pairs, with one having north polarity and one having south. solarcycle-2
solarcycle-3
So, while the Earth has one magnetic field, the Sun has millions: solarcycle-4
solarcycle-5 Here’s a simplified sketch of the Sun and 2 example sunspot pairs.  I made one pole of each pair red, and one blue, to signify North and South poles of the spot.  I also show the small North and South magnetic fields at the Sun’s poles. These are similar to those on the Earth.  The solid arrows indicate how the Sun is rotating.

Note particularly:

  • The sunspot pair in the northern hemisphere has a leading red pole. All the spot pairs in the northern hemisphere will have a leading red pole.
  • The sunspot pair in the southern hemisphere has a leading blue pole. All the spot pairs in the southern hemisphere will have a leading blue pole.
  • The spots in the pairs are not in a line. The leading spot will be closer to the equator than the following spot.
  • The following spots are the opposite pole of the field at the solar poles.
  • Hence the following spots are attracted to the fields at the solar poles. That’s what causes the offset!

There is an 11-year cycle when the Sun goes from few sunspots, to lots of sunspots, then back to few.   The image above shows the Sun in a low point of that cycle, with only a few spots.  Below is what the Sun might look like at the peak of its cycle, with lots of spots.

Again note that all the leading spots in each hemisphere are the same color, and all the following spots in each hemisphere are attracted toward the Sun’s poles. solarcycle-6
solarcycle-7 During the Sun’s 11-year cycle, the fields from the trailing spots tend to float towards and collect at the Sun’s poles, since they are opposites and opposite fields attract.   Here’s how you might imagine that looks.
It takes about 11 years for the fields that float up to the poles to overpower the magnetic field already at the pole.  Then, the poles “flip” polarity, essentially changing to the opposite pole.  So North has become blue, and South red: solarcycle-8

At this point, a second 11-year cycle begins, but this time the polarities of the Sun’s poles and the leading and trailing spots have all changed.

So, the Sun actually has a 22-year cycle, not just an 11-year one, because the magnetic fields at its poles change polarity! - Deborah Scherrer, Director,Stanford University Solar Center, USA

How can Prana Shakti from the Sun be proved in the light of the latest research available from NASA? - Gyanesh

Solar Science and Heliophysics is in its very impressive development phase. NASA, ESA, ESO and space observatories have open the amazing door of the Sun. But they are restricted to heliophysics and not related with the Chetana (soul) of the Sun even though the findings are very near to the basic thoughts of Gurudev e.g. the Sun affects human life, earth, climate etc., about which Gurudev spoke just 6 decades ago. We are made up of the Sun, so any change in the Sun will directly affects us.

We believe that pran shakti is Savita, the vital energy source of the Universe and of our Sun. This means that Savita is not the Sun, but it controls the Sun. Chanting of Gayatri Mantra and Suryarghy will help us to connect with the pran chetana of the Sun. - DDPurohit

Will the New Horizon spacecraft to Pluto continue its travels after entering the Kuiper Belt? - Kushal. U. Vyas, Vadodara, Gujarat.

New Horizons was launched on Jan. 19, 2006; it swung past Jupiter for a gravity boost and scientific studies in February 2007, and will conduct a five-month-long reconnaissance flyby study of Pluto and its moons in the summer of 2015. Pluto closest approach is scheduled for July 14, 2015. As part of an extended mission, the spacecraft is expected to head farther into the Kuiper Belt to examine one or two of the ancient, icy mini-worlds in that vast region, at least a billion miles beyond Neptune’s orbit. - DDPurohit

if our sun's color will blue or red then what effect do on our earth and other planet....at this time life is possible on our earth.- Harshil Patel ,Bharuch

Colour of a star represents its temperature.Blue represents very high temperature while red represents very low comparing to the Sun .In any case life would not be possible on earth as either earth would be like a fireball or like an Ice ball .-DDPurohit
